Google today released its third Android 11 beta, and this is a major release because it’s also the final beta update.
Android 11 Beta 3 is now available to Pixel phones. That includes the Pixel 2 and 2 XL, Pixel 3 and 3 XL, Pixel 3a and 3a XL, and Pixel 4 and 4 XL.
If you’ve already got the Android 11 beta installed, you should get the update over the air. You can also enroll in the Android Beta Program to get this new beta sent to you if you’re not already running a beta release, or you can install Google’s factory images manually.
Google already reached platform stability with the previous Android 11 beta release, which means that all of the APIs and behaviors have already been finalized. Google does say that with this Beta 3 release, it’s enabled users to run the Exposure Notification apps on Android 11 without turning on the device location setting.
“This is an exception we’re making for the Exposure Notification System only, given that it has been designed in such a way that apps using it can’t infer device location through Bluetooth scanning,” Google explains. “To protect user privacy, all other apps will still be prohibited from performing Bluetooth scanning unless the device location setting is on and the user has granted them location permission.”
The Exposure Notification system is the tool that’s used for coronavirus tracking apps to help alert you if you’ve come into contact with someone who has contracted COVID-19.
Here’s the build info for the Android 11 Beta 3 release:
- Date: August 6, 2020
- Build: RPB3.200720.005
- Emulator support: x86 (32/64-bit)
- Security patch level: August 2020
- Google Play services: 20.24.14
- API diff: API 29 → API 30, DP4 → API 30
Google says that the official Android 11 release is coming “very soon”. It still hasn’t announced a concrete launch date, but Google did accidentally let slip in an Android Developers video that September 8 is date that the stable Android 11 update will be released to the public.
