Google Play Music for Wear OS will stop working soon

Moto 360 hands-on

This week we learned that Google Play Music would begin shutting down in September as Google continues its transition to YouTube Music. Now we know that the shutdown is going to affect Wear OS as well.

Google says that in “the next couple of weeks”, you’ll no longer be able to use or download Google Play Music on Wear OS smartwatches. Google explains that this is part of its efforts to improve integrated music services through all connected devices with YouTube Music.

While Google does say that it’s working on bringing a better music experience in the coming months with improvements to YouTube Music, there’s no app for it to replace Google Play Music right now. As Droid-Life notes, that means users won’t be able to save music to their smartwatch for offline listening or find a new playlist using their watch.

You will be able to use your Wear OS smartwatch to remotely control the YouTube Music app on your Android or iOS phone.

Because Google Play Music is shutting down later this year, it’s not a huge surprise that the Wear OS app will stop working soon, too. Folks who are used to having that app on their smartwatch are probably a bit frustrated that there’s no comparable YouTube Music app to replace it and give them functionality beyond just playback controls, though.
