Google Stadia opens to any Android phone, adds touch controls

Google Stadia controller

To date, Google Stadia has only supported on select Android phones, like Google’s Pixel devices and recent Samsung Galaxy flagships. Today Google announced that it’s making Stadia available to many, many more Android phones.

First up, Google is adding more OnePlus devices to its list of officially supported Stadia phones. The OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro already support Stadia, and now the OnePlus 7T and 7T Pro, the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G, the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro, the OnePlus 6 and 6T, and OnePlus 5 and 5T also have official Stadia support.

But Google’s not stopping there. You can now play Stadia games on any Android phone that can install the Stadia app, including ones that aren’t on the list of officially supported devices. The Stadia app requires Android 6.0 or later, so you should be able to give Stadia a try on most recent Android devices.

Google cautions that this feature is still in development and so not every phone will work perfectly, but if you’ve got an Android device that’s not officially supported but you want to try Stadia, now you can do it.

To play Stadia on a phone that’s not officially supported, you’ll need to load up the Stadia app and navigate to the “Experiments” tab in the Settings menu. Then select “Play on this device” and you should be good to go.

Google Stadia touch controls

Google also announced a couple of new features for Stadia itself today. First is mobile touch controls, letting you play games on your phone without a physical gamepad. You can access the touch controls by selecting “Try touch gamepad” after launching a game without a controller connected.

Touch controls are available for every game on Stadia, and while some games will be better suited for touch controls than others, it’s good to see Google offering this option.

Finally, you can now change your Stadia resolutions for each device you play on. Previously when you changed the resolution in your Stadia app, this change was applied to all your devices.

This feature is starting to roll out today and should appear for everyone within a few days. Here’s how you can change the resolution on your Chromecast Ultra, on the web, and on your phone:
