John Legere leaves T-Mobile board of directors to ‘pursue other options’

John Legere T-Mobile

We’ve known for a while now that once the T-Mobile-Sprint merger was complete, John Legere would be stepping down as CEO but would stick around for a while on the T-Mobile board of directors. Today, though, it’s been revealed that he’s abruptly exiting the company entirely.

John Legere notified T-Mobile today that he was resigning from the T-Mo board of directors effective immediately so that he can “pursue other options.” T-Mobile revealed the exit in a filing with the SEC. He was expected to stay on the board of directors until June 4th.

The filing adds that Legere told T-Mobile that he wasn’t resigning due to any disagreement with the company’s management or board.

Legere gave T-Mobile the following statement in his notice of resignation to T-Mobile:

“It has been a privilege and honor to have led T-Mobile as CEO for the past seven and a half years and served on the Board of Directors. And although I will be leaving the Board just a few weeks earlier than planned, be assured that I remain T-Mobile’s #1 fan!”

T-Mobile was struggling as the fourth place US carrier when Legere was named CEO in 2012, but he helped to turn T-Mo around with Un-carrier moves that also caused changes in the wireless industry. Because of his effect on T-Mobile, a lot of people are curious about what he’s going to do next, and that interest is only going to be amplified by this abrupt exit.

What do you think is next for John Legere?
