Major updates like iOS 14 and Android 11 typically bring lots of new features and other improvements, but they also normally bring something else that a lot of people get excited about: new emoji. Today we’re getting a preview of the new emoji Apple and Google will be adding to their mobile OSes later this year.
First up, Apple has previewed several of the new emoji characters that will likely launch later this year as part of an iOS 14 update. Emojipedia shared the images that show emoji like a dodo bird, a ninja, a coin, bubble tea, and a pinched fingers gesture.
These emoji characters are part of the Emoji 13.0 update, which was approved earlier this year. The update includes 62 new emoji characters plus 55 skin tone and gender variants.
Apple hasn’t said when it will add these new emoji to iOS, but it’ll likely be with iOS 14.1 or iOS 14.2. In the past few years, Apple has rolled out new emoji with iOS 11.1, 12.1, and 13.2 updates that began rolling out in October of 2017, 2018, and 2019, respectively, so we could see this year’s new emoji arrive in iOS 14 sometime this October.
Google is adding new emoji to Android this year, too. While the same basic emoji characters are coming to both Android and iOS, Google’s emoji for Android 11 will look a bit different than Apple’s emoji for iOS 14, just as we’ve seen in the past.
Google told 9to5Google today that it also worked with the Monterey Bay Aquarium and Victoria Bug Zoo to give the animals in its emoji update a “more authentic look.” Some emoji also got a redesign so that they look better when your phone is in dark mode.
Google says that its new emoji will arrive in the fall with the launch of Android 11.
