Samsung Galaxy Note 10 may drop earpiece for Sound on Display tech

Rumors have said that the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 may not have a 3.5mm headphone jack. According to a new leak, though, that may not be the only big change with regard to audio that the Note 10 makes.

The Galaxy Note 10 will use Sound on Display technology to emit audio, according to leaker Ice Universe. Images shared by them appear to show screen protectors for the Note 10, and they have a very thin chin and no speaker cutouts on the forehead.

With Sound on Display, the screen uses vibrations to transmit sound rather than a traditional earpiece or speaker. This would allow for Samsung to shrink the top and bottom bezels of the Note 10 and put in a larger screen without making the whole phone bigger. Rumors have said that Samsung is making a Note 10 with a 6.75-inch screen, which is larger than the 6.4-inch screen on the Note 9, and so using Sound on Display would enable Samsung to put that larger display in the Note 10 without making the body massively larger.

We saw LG use a similar technology on the G8 ThinQ earlier this year. That phone uses Crystal Sound OLED to turn the phone’s screen into a speaker diaphragm, eliminating the need for a front speaker. Now it sounds like Samsung may do something similar with the Note 10, and we’d be interested in putting the Note 10’s Sound on Display to the test to see how it compares to a traditional speaker.
